Remember when you were 7 or 8 and a warm, fresh-from the oven cookie was the most wonderful thing your little brain could possibly comprehend? Yeah, they were awesome. Heck, they still are – and chocolate chip cookies were one of the best. Since today is National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, we’re paying tribute to these delectable morsels and honoring a few of the many delicious varieties available. So take a moment, join us as we explore the world of these sublime circular sweet treats.

Chocolate chip cookies embody all that is right with the world; warm, gooey, sugary insides with a slight buttery crisp on the outside. They make you want to hug a stranger, kiss a baby, help an old lady across the street. They’re basically magical. And the best part is there’s no one RIGHT recipe to make them. Here are a few of our favorite kinds of chocolate chip cookies (or galletas de chocolate chip for those of you who enjoy more south-of-the-border dessert flare).

Original – No add-ons, no fruit, no nuts, just sugar, flour, baking soda, butter, eggs, vanilla and chocolate chips. Mix, bake, eat, repeat. They’re original, no fuss, and delicious. They’re like the Tina Fey of the chocolate chip cookie world – not the fanciest girl at the dance, but guaranteed to make you smile and maybe even like Alec Baldwin a bit more.

Skillet cookies – Chocolate chip cookies as big as VW Bug? Uhhh, duh! Skillet cookies are gigantic and most commonly found on restaurant dessert menus. Warning: don’t try to eat one of these by yourself. Call your best friend, order a skillet cookie and get your glutton on. They’re 100% worth the guilt you’ll feel immediately after taking the last bite.

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t – Pecans, almonds, peanuts, cashews…go ahead and go a little crazy with the nuts in your chocolate chip cookies. The extra crunch and the flavor of the nuts will add depth and complexity to these already delicious cookies.

Peanut butter chocolate chip – Like a Reese’s peanut butter cup, only as a cookie. You can either opt for the peanut butter cookie version and add chocolate chips, or you can go with the old standard cookie and add peanut butter chips. Yes, friends, you read that correctly, there are peanut butter chips in this world. And they are awesome.

Oatmeal chocolate chip – A little heartier than the original, this version is one of my favorites. If you like the cookie flavor of oatmeal raisin cookies, give them a try with chocolate chips instead.

Turtle Chocolate Chip
– Start with awesomeness, add toasted pecans and ooey-gooey caramel, prepare to be amazed.

Double Chocolate – For intense chocolate lovers ONLY. Instead of the normal cookie deliciousness these suckers are chocolate cookies loaded with chocolate chips for a double the wow.

Vacation Cookies (airplane, hotel, etc.) – The person who made it possible for airline stewards to bake chocolate chip cookies on planes should be given a Nobel Prize. I like to believe that this same genius came up with the idea that hotel guests should receive freshly made cookies before bed. Vacation chocolate chip cookies are amazing: they’re unexpected, they taste deceptively like the cookies Mom used to make, and they’re free.
