With summer winding down, it’s time to turn our attention to fall – and fall cocktails. Bourbon, America’s Native Spirit, may be the quintessential whiskey for the chilly months ahead. Perfect straight up in a snifter or in a cocktail on ice, it is guaranteed to warm the bones with its rich, full taste and finish.

Bourbon has been experiencing a renaissance lately; consumer demand and interest in the venerable spirit has probably never been higher. Fueling this increase is the introduction of new expressions. And Beam Inc., maker of the world’s No.1-selling bourbon has been doing its part, launching an array of new products that are helping to redefine the category. Some of the new expressions include Devil’s Cut™, a robust premium bourbon with a deep color, aroma and character that showcases notes of wood, oak and vanilla derived from the barrel wood; and Red Stag by Jim Beam® Honey Tea, a smooth, sweet whiskey experience that features the flavors of two southern classics: sweet honey and tea.

All new, all good and perfect neat or in cocktails.

I’ve asked my good friend, Fred Noe, Beam’s Master Distiller and Jim Beam’s great-grandson for some autumn sipping ideas and here’s what he came up with:

The classic bourbon cocktail

1 ¾ parts Jim Beam® Black Bourbon
¾ part vermouth
Bitters (optional)

Add the sweet vermouth to the bourbon in a Manhattan glass. Optional: Add a dash of bitters. Garnish with a cherry.

An oldie but goodie

1 ½ parts Jim Beam® Bourbon
2 dashes of bitters
Orange slice
Lemon wedge
½ tsp. sugar

In an old-fashioned glass, dissolve sugar and bitters in water. Fill glass with ice. Add bourbon; garnish with cherry, orange slice and lemon wedge.

Knob Creek® Bourbon Mint Julep

Off to the Races…

Knob Creek Mint Julep

1 ½parts Knob Creek Bourbon
1 tsp. granulated sugar
2 tsp. water
Finely crushed ice
Fresh mint, washed and patted dry

In a highball glass, dissolve the sugar in the water. Fill glass with crushed ice and add bourbon. Stir contents until glass becomes frosty. Remove stems from some of the mint leaves and use a straw to push them into the chilled julep mix for added flavor. Garnish with remaining sprigs of mint.

Devil’s Play Punch:

The Devil made me do it…

Devils Cut Punch

Devils Cut Punch

1 part Devil’s Cut Bourbon
½ part ginger ale
½ part soda water
1 lemon wedge

Combine ingredient in a tall, ice-filled glass. Garnish with fresh lemon.
