Mama always said to eat your vegetables, but she never said we couldn’t fry them in beer batter and seasoning, right? The onion, in particular, is a vegetable commonly used for its versatile, flavor-boosting properties. Yellow, sweet, white, and red onions offer zesty flavorings to a variety of sauces, soups, stews, salads, sandwiches, salsas, stir-fries and more! However, one of my favorite onion recipes consists of breaded onions submerged in a 365° deep-fryer (also known as: ONION RINGS!).
For over 100 years, the onion ring has become a staple of many restaurants, bars, and pubs, because of crispy deliciousness encased with a sweet, soft texture.
With countless ways to indulge, it’s no surprise that June 22 marks National Onion Rings Day! Whether you prefer yours paired with American classics like burgers and hot dogs, or simply like to enjoy them à la carte, the onion ring delivers a crispy, crunchy satisfaction no one can refuse.
The Original Onion Ring
The onion ring everyone knows and loves consists of thinly sliced onions coated with crispy breading. Over the years, people have experimented with different ingredients to enhance the overall tastiness of this recipe. To spice up this classic and to complement the batter, many people have incorporated beer, lime zest, chili powder, and cayenne pepper! It’s served best when paired with condiments, such as honey mustard, chipotle ranch, or mayo.
A bloomin’ onion is a popular appetizer served in restaurants and bars nationwide. It gets its name from a large onion cut in the shape of a flower. Much like the original onion ring, it is battered and deep-fried and served with dipping sauce. We guarantee this unique masterpiece will make your mouth water just from ordering if off the menu!

Onion Ring Toppings
As if onion rings couldn’t get any more versatile, a common trend among restaurants is layering the crispy rounded goodness onto burgers and sandwiches! Overflowing with flavor, onion rings are the perfect addition to your savory meal. Think of your classic burger accompanied with onion rings, cheddar cheese, and bacon – talk about yum! Now, that’s what we all love at first bite.
It’s no wonder that this staple has not only become a heavenly side dish, but garnish as well. They’re a must-have complement to any meal—from burgers, steaks, and chops. You can even find them in your upscale restaurants perched atop your filet mignon. These simple, but delectable delights are often the crowning glory to any meal. Celebrate deliciously!
