Fall means cooler weather, chimney smoke, brightly colored leaves and an abundance of sweet and savory apple dishes ripe for the picking!  Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, Gala, Jonagold, McIntosh, Fuji; there are more than 7,000 varieties of apples and we are excited about all of them! Make the most of this fabulous culinary season with delicious options for every meal and palate.

Sweet Somethings

Apple pastries are in rare form September -November. Whether you’re stopping at your local chain coffee stop or hitting your favorite hometown pastry shop, you’ll want to splurge on doughnuts, turnovers, cakes, pies, cookies and more right now.  Look for unique combinations like ginger or sharp cheese for a little sweet treat variety.

Savory Selections

You can leave your sweet tooth at home and still take full advantage of apple season. Savory apple dishes often feature complex flavors that will leave your taste buds singing.  Want to stick to soup or salad?  You can find apples in both. Soups like curried apple or roasted squash and apple are perfect for warming up while the weather is turning cooler, while spicy greens and herbs like endive or fenel pair perfectly with sweet, crisp apple slices, blue cheese and a vinaigrette.

Looking for a more substantial meal? Many pork dishes feature apples as a key ingredient. Apples also make a great addition to a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich. Vegetarians need not fear, there are plenty of apple options for you as well! Keep an eye out for rich gratins (potato and cheese dishes) with apples and other winter vegetables like squash and leeks for a truly amazing apple experience.

No matter how you choose to enjoy apples this season, we encourage you to experiment with this incredible fruit in as many ways as possible. Hungry for more delicious fall flavors? Check out Heather’s post on Pumpkins Galore for another tasty treat.
